CMMS PAS, Lodz, Poland
Professor Barbara Nawrot is the Head of the Department of Bioorganic Chemistry at the Centre of Molecular and Macromolecular Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Łódź. She runs two units – the Laboratory of Nucleic Acid Therapeutics and the Screening Laboratory of Anticancer Compounds. She obtained a PhD in organic chemistry from the Lodz University of Technology. Her postdoctoral fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (New York, USA) focused on the synthesis of anti-cancer / anti-viral nucleosides, was followed by extensive training in chemistry and biology of transfer RNA (biological function of modified nucleosides in tRNA and the role of aminoacylation in tRNA recognition by proteins of translation machinery). This 3-year research stay at the Department of Biochemistry at Bayreuth University (Germany) was extended by training in the field of therapeutic nucleic acids at the Gene Discovery Research Center, AIST (Tsukuba, Japan). Over the past 15 years, her research interests have been shaped around the bacterial epitranscriptome, its biosynthesis and function in the metabolism of bacterial cells.
